Before we get to the story, though, read <a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"http:\/\/darkwolfsfantasyreviews.blogspot.com\/2014\/07\/free-fiction-lipstick-by-michael-haulica.html\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">this brief piece<\/span><\/a> from Dark Wolf&#8217;s Fantasy Reviews on Haulic\u0103 and the story&#8217;s previous publications:<\/em><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">&#8220;I am certain that plenty of Romanian writers can make an important contribution to the world of speculative fiction and I do hope that one day more of their works would be translated into English. &#8230;here is another example of Romanian speculative fiction, a morsel of a story, \u201cLipstick\u201d, written by one of the most important names in [Romanian] science fiction, Michael Haulic\u0103. \u201cLipstick\u201d was published several times in Romanian, in 1993 in <em>Jurnalul SF (SF Journal)<\/em>, 1996 in <em>Dependent SF<\/em> (SF Addicted), 1998 in <em>Dealul Melcilor<\/em> (Snails\u2019 Hill), 2001 <em>Cronica Rom\u00e2n\u0103<\/em> (Romanian Chronicle), in the author\u2019s personal volumes, \u201cMadia Mangalena\u201d (1999) and \u201cFantastic Stories\u201d (2010), translated into Danish in 2004 and published in \u201cScience Fiction\u201d magazine and in English in \u201cMagaera\u201d (2003), \u201cMagaera Anthology Vol.1\u201d (2005) and <em>Anotherealm<\/em> (2003), [as] finalist of the \u201cInvasion\u201d contest.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>&#8220;Lipstick&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Tuesday: I infiltrated them according to standard procedure. I don\u2019t think they noticed. Everything\u2019s going well, maybe too well. For now, I\u2019m trying to expose myself as little as possible. The metamorphosis is perfect, but I need time to get used to this new look. Plus I\u2019m still having trouble assimilating their communication code.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Monday: I started selling the lipstick. It\u2019s selling well&#8230;like any exotic merchandise. The first pitch happened in the afternoon. It was thrilling! They were good, I was excellent. They were terribly thirsty, I was excellently thirsty. They really wanted to go to the movies, I wanted to go to the excellent movies. They predicted it would rain hard tomorrow, I reassured them that it would rain excellently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Wednesday: I met with one of them this morning. \u201cHow are you?\u201d I asked him. \u201cI\u2019m fine,\u201d he said. I offered him lipstick and he put some on his lips. I asked again, \u201chow are you?\u201d \u201cExcellent,\u201d was the answer. Excellent! That\u2019s how it should be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Later we went bowling. He threw the first ball. \u201cGood,\u201d I said. \u201cExcellent,\u201d he replied. I threw a ball, too. \u201cExcellent!\u201d he exclaimed. \u201cExcellent,\u201d I confirmed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Then he called for a new ball. I did, too. \u201cYou keep score,\u201d he said. \u201cNo, you launch,\u201d I replied. \u201cLet\u2019s play chess, instead,\u201d he said. \u201cYeah, let\u2019s launch chess,\u201d I agreed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Friday: We were sitting at a table on the beerhouse terrace. One of them approached and greeted me with colored lips. \u201cExcellent launch!\u201d I motioned for him to sit. \u201cHow are you?\u201d I sounded him out. \u201cExcellent! Let me launch you another beer,\u201d he answered. \u201cLet\u2019s both launch another beer,\u201d I urged him. He turned to the waiter and ordered: \u201cExcellent! Launch two for the boy!\u201d And the answer came, as expected: \u201cLauuuuuuunch!\u201d Meanwhile, we talked about mayonnaise. When we parted, he wished me an \u201cexcellent mayonnaise launch.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Sunday: My stock of lipstick has decreased considerably. I closed down my stand. I\u2019ll just carry a few with me. Apparently, they\u2019ve started making the lipsticks themselves. From what, I have no idea. I saw someone selling them in the market. He shouted as long as he could, as is their custom: \u201cGet red! Buy lipstick! Wonderful speech lipstick! Whoever uses it can communicate launch with anyone! With everyone! On all the worlds!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Business is flourishing. Really flourishing. This is obvious from their intensely colored lips.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">In my room that evening, I remove my makeup carefully, so as not to confuse my thoughts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Monday: The streets are filled with posters showing a man with colored lips, offering lipstick to a creature that\u2019s likely from another civilization. Looks a bit like a Thesarian\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">A scientific symposium. Scientists, a lot of them. They were talking about flying, I was talking about mushrooms. They went on about other civilizations, I about mushrooms. They about&#8230;I about&#8230;They&#8230;I&#8230;I left them talking about mushrooms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Wednesday: When I left the house, the landlady, a middle-aged woman wearing a lot of lipstick, whispered to me confidentially that \u201cfishing for the globe\u2019s enthroning excellent as is.\u201d She\u2019s absolutely right. I gave her a tube of lipstick and we were instant friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Thursday: Today we talked about snow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Saturday: Dust; long discussions about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Sunday: I rested. I deserve it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Monday: Uncle&#8230;Nephew.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Tuesday: Cities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Wednesday: Chance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Thursday: Mirobolant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Friday: Life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Satuday: Parapsychobit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Monday: Lipstick.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Tuesday: Lipstick.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Wednesday: Lipstick.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Friday: The first Institute of Coloristics was inaugurated. They\u2019ve already received applications for master\u2019s degrees in Parallel Chromatics, Integrated Metacoloristics, Color Psychophysiology, Protocoloristics, Dialectical and Historical Mythochromatism. They\u2019re hard at work revising the textbooks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Monday: Spent a day with the military. Regulations, discipline, order, conformity, civics, heroism, duty, honesty, honor\u2026 Each soldier carries lipstick in his backpack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Tuesday: The youth\u2014eternal partisans of the new\u2014have adopted color as a permanent part of their fashion: they dye their hair, paint their eyelids and lips, and march peacefully, waving their lipstick and shouting: \u201cNo to weapons, yes to lipstick!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Wednesday: Photos of the Parapsychic Games\u2019 new flag have come out: it\u2019s lipstick on a colorless background.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Thursday: They finished painting the buildings, which all look the same now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Friday: Since daybreak, a huge crowd has been moving toward the planet\u2019s newest monument. On the so-called roof stands a gigantic lipstick statue, surrounded by a trembling halo, turning everything irridescent: trees, dust, air&#8230;Several officers carry miniature versions around. Their assistants throw lipstick all around while the crowd sings odes to lipstick.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Some needy people with colorless lips throw themselves to the ground to grab some lipstick. They\u2019re viewed with sympathy and encouraged. The luckiest of them snag some and immediately paint their lips, eyelids, and ears.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Excellent! Excellent!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Saturday: An electoral campaign. Political platforms, drilling platforms, platforms&#8230;Plat, plat, plat&#8230;No form, just color. Monochrome. They\u2019ve postponed the election.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Sunday: I found the following letter in my mailbox: \u201cI launch you excellent. The solar mushroom in front of the mirobolant. May the parapsychobitant dust launch snow. Lipstick! Lipstick! Lipstick!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Their language is much improved; it almost doesn\u2019t exist anymore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Everything\u2019s gone as planned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Lipstick! How wonderful that word sounds!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">My ship awaits me\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">It\u2019s night. Their sun set long ago. In its place, in the starry sky, is the ship, outlined as if with lipstick.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">I showed up at the gate and their cheers filled me with joy. The crowd pushed its representatives forward; they said: \u201cExcellent! Launch the mirobolant! Parapsychobit our lives! Lipstick! Lipstick! Excellent!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">We had a great time. Excellent!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Finally! It\u2019s done. Mission accomplished. Now I can resume my normal appearance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">I enter the ship and feel like I\u2019m already home. I connect the MIM circuit and the Excellency appears first in my CUB, as an image, and then materializes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">He has colored lips. Violently colored, but it suits Him. The color suits Him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">I approach Him and touch his mantle as a sign of Humility and Obedience. He touches me, establishing privileged contact. We communicate. I can sense His eagerness. It\u2019s as if these vibrations, through their assonances, are creating a state of anxiety in me, as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">I deliver a full mission report. He looks puzzled. Then his thought, like a powerful wave, crashes through my brain: \u201cWshaakingaa&#8230;\u201d Now I\u2019m confused. He points to the lipstick. I put another layer of color on my lips and resume communication, ending triumphantly: \u201cThe parapsychobitant lipstick mirobolizes!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">\u201cExcellent!\u201d Appreciation and relief. He\u2019s happy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Another wave, comforting this time, enters me. \u201cGnrl.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">I humbly thank Him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Before the Excellency\u2019s features dematerialize, I gratefully receive the appeal: \u201cLaunch! Launch! Launch!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The hologram disappears too and my benefactor materializes on his own ship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Alone. Alone again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">I remove my makeup, as usual.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">A few tubes of lipstick lie in the corner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">A perfect weapon.
